Fish Den

The oldest aquarium fish store in Denver, open since 1970! That’s over 50 years. It started out as a small store in the little shopping center off of 44th and over the years it has grown to take over the whole building! That's 3,600 Sq. feet packed with aquariums, supplies and of course fish! When you see the pics, there are a lot, you will get a feel for the sheer size of the place.

Fish Den 5055 W 44th Ave, Denver, CO 80212. They are open 11-5 every day of the week, holiday hours may vary. They are a one stop shop, meaning they have everything an aquarist could need, including pond supplies, tanks galore, all the decorations one would need, fish food including live foods (check with them on what they have available at the time), freshwater fish, plants, and saltwater fish, corals, and inverts. I honestly do not know another store in Colorado which has a larger selection. They are a must see on the fish crawl tour! I took a ton of photos there so you can get a good idea of their stock. Think of it as a virtual tour. Obviously if you are looking for something specific it is always a good idea to give them a call before driving over. This goes for any LFS and don’t forget to ask about special ordering items if they don’t have it.

My only concern with Fish Den is the dark dingy space they have to display fish and the sad looking plants. I know this is for showing off the fish better and some folks will just love the space. Remember that the store has been there for many years, the fish are well kept, healthy, and the tanks are clean, so this is good enough for me. I have purchased from them many times and am very happy with the service and quality. I am sure you will be leaving the store with a long wish list! It is almost like visiting a neighborhood public aquarium.

In the back is the saltwater room which they recently remodeled. The tanks are looking very good, though some seem dirty, they are left that way to support infusoria and algae for the fish or inverts to eat. The nice display tank by the door could use a glass cleaning but otherwise looks impressive. They have a new tank in the back of the room (new to me) with a beautiful shark. In the pics below I got a pic of their price list which was posted by the door. I am sure with the turnover it is hard to keep up with labeling the tanks. I am pleased with the selection of livestock, though there are other saltwater specialty stores with larger selections. If you click on the pic, it will enlarge.

To sum up this review, Fish Den is an old standard in the LFS scene and remains a must see. If I lived closer, it would be my go-to store. Though they do have some good competition from About Fish and the next few stores I will feature depending on what you are looking for. They do a great job of offering the aquarist a wide selection of just about everything one would need. No easy feat!
