Denver Freshwater

This blog will be a quick opinionated review of the best Freshwater LFS in the Denver area. There are no photos here because I have specific blogs on each of these LFS. Just use the search feature on the website. I will cover the town they are located in, what they specialize in, and how I rate them as a LFS. A full list of LFS can be found on the home page of this website. Let’s jump right in.

Aquatic Dog has long been my favorite LFS and not only because it is the closest to me on the east side of Denver. They specialize in nanofish, though with the new ownership they have expanded to include goldfish and some cichlids. They also have reptiles, mammals, and dogs. Their pet supplies cover most pets, so just call and ask if you have a specific item you are looking for. They may just have it.

Aqua Rocks has emerged as my second favorite LFS for several reasons. They are also close to me, being in Commerce City, not far off I-70. They often carry what I need, and no one in the state has display tanks like this store. I just reviewed them, so go check out that blog.

About Fish has the best selection of fish in the whole state. They have recently expanded their cichlid section as well as the live plants area just beyond the front desk. They only have freshwater at this LFS, though they do it very well. They are located just off I-36 on Federal Blvd. I rank this store tops in fish and third in everything else.

MC Aquatics is the new kid on the block and holds fourth place for me. They carry both fresh and saltwater supplies, tanks, plants, and fish. This place is big! They have a wide selection in every aspect of the hobby. It is well worth the visit to Englewood! I have a blog coming out on this LFS soon.

Neptune’s Tropical Fish comes in next. They are located in Highland Ranch and specialize in being an all-around LFS. Both the freshwater and saltwater sections are top notch both in selection and quality. My only reservation I have when visiting this LFS is their supplies tend to be a bit pricier that other stores.

Nature Box Pet Emporium located in Aurora has a wonderful selection of freshwater fish and it is also the largest exotic pet store in Colorado. They offer aquariums and all the supplies you need as an aqueon supplier. Their Fly River turtle has an awesome tank and so if you like pets, check out this store. The fish offered cover all the usual with livebearers, cichlids, and other various aquatic animals.

Golden Fish in Lakewood ranks high with cichlids and goldfish, though last time I visited the selection of goldfish left a lot to be desired. They have good Discus fish too. The other tropical fish are less thrilling. I have made special trips to this LFS just to get a specific fish, so worth the trip.

Fish Den and Pet World are also in the Lakewood area and rank as a good general LFS. Fish Den has the best selection of new aquariums of anyone in the state and Pet World has both fresh and saltwater as well as mammals and birds.

Ray’s Tank in Northglenn ranks best in Large, Monster fish. What I love about this store is the clean open approach they take with the filtration. It has a wonderful Asian flare to it, if you have ever seen the tropical fish markets over there. I don’t do monster fish, though I hear the Stingray’s and Arowana are the best anywhere. They also carry a nice selection of flowerhorns and puffer fish.

So, there you have it. An overview of all the Freshwater LFS in the Denver Metro. I will have a review of the Saltwater LFS and how they rank coming soon. Thanks for reading and feel free to make a comment below if you like.
