Aqua Imports is located right off the business thoroughfare at 2690 28th St # C, Boulder, CO 80301. Their hours are 11-6 Monday thru Saturday, 12-5 on Sunday.
They specialize in having rare and hard to find, Fresh & Saltwater aquaria along with reptiles, amphibians, arachnids and insects. They also have a large selection of dry goods to support their animals. The folks I know in Boulder love this store as do many others in the aquarium hobby. I think what has kept them afloat in the current market is their online sales, although I don’t know this for a fact. If you are looking for rare aquaria, they will find it for you if at all possible. Don’t expect to find great bargains here though, you will pay for the privilege of rarity. The layout of the store can be confusing, though I really like how the cichlids and large fish have their own room in the back. While the store has many tanks, the actual space they take up is small, meaning the tanks are stacked 4 high. For me this means it is really hard to see the tanks on the floor level and at the top. Yes, they make good use of the space, but it makes for a poor customer experience.
For me the reasons not to shop here are easy, it is an hour drive from me, the store is cramped and dingy, they don’t have the best customer service experience, and the prices are average to high. The other thing about AI is their preferential treatment of their special customers. I get a good ole’ boy vibe there and suspect that the deals and service are far better for those in the know. This should not be surprising though; it is Boulder after all.
Depending on where you live this could be the go-to LFS or not worth the drive. I like to include it in my LFS crawls when I am in the area though, if for no other reason than to see what they have in stock. They also have some really nice display tanks, including an 800g monster fish tank. North of Denver the LFS choices are limited so this makes AI an attractive choice, esp. for the serious fish keeper.
