Another LFS closes its door.

An update to my blog of October 24th, 2023. Big changes for Murrman’s Reef. Jack is closing the storefront and only doing business online which makes perfect sense since the online auctions are the main thing keeping them afloat. His letter below will shed more light on these changes. I wish him and all associated the best on this transition.

“Jack Stubs Murray is at Murrman's REEF in Denver, CO.

All good things come to an end and Unfortunately Murrman's REEF has decided to close our retail storefront.

Murrman’s has been my baby for the past 7 years, It's been a good run, but over the past 7-10 months taking care of the Reef Builders studio, watching old Reef Builders videos, listening to old Reef Therapy episodes, I've decided I want to go in a different direction where I can focus on YouTube and growing Reef Builders!

I also want to focus more on my local clients tanks that have been good to me over the years. I will take on a few additional maintenance clients. Only way that's happening is if I get rid of my 70-100 hour a week day job that has burnt me out.

While we are still busy, and have sold over 15k corals online this past year, it's better for me professionally and mentally to focus on what I love.

We will keep doing auctions in some capacity just not like we do now as I really want to focus on growing corals, and being a true hobbyist.

If you have corals that need to be shipped out, we will be getting them out over the coming weeks! If you're looking for someone to service your tanks, now’s the time to hit me up and get on the roster as I will only be taking on a few more. I'm excited for the future, and can't wait to see where this path with Reef Builders takes me.

Starting today we will be offering 20% off store-wide. As livestock gets sold, we will break down the flats and those too will be available.

We would also be willing to sell the entire store in its current state (with over $50,000 in inventory) for $50,000 along with all of the equipment worth close to $100,000. There is a ton of potential, it just needs someone who has the time.

-Jack” (quote from Facebook with edits for grammar)

So in conclusion, I am not surprised anymore by any LFS closings. Business is such a precarious prospect. Personally, I have attempted it several times in my life with poor results. I admire anyone who can make a go of it in business, especially the Fish Store kind. My gratitude rests with those who keep us hobbyists supplied. The brick and mortar business will always be a source of joy for me! To see all the different fish swimming happily or not so much around their tanks saying secretly, please take me home and love me. I do Love you.
